TRAFFIC RULES IN NEVADA

Heading out to the South Point 400 is part of the experience, but knowing the local rules of the road can make your trip a lot smoother. Nevada driving laws are similar to those in most U.S. states, though there are a few points worth keeping in mind.

Driving in Nevada

Traffic in Nevada, like the rest of the U.S., flows on the right-hand side. If you’re not used to this, take extra care at intersections, when leaving parking areas, and when making U-turns near the Speedway.

Speed limits

Limits shift depending on the type of road. Residential areas are generally 25–30 mph (40–48 km/h), state routes usually post 55–65 mph (89–105 km/h), and interstate highways can go up to 70 mph (113 km/h). Pay attention to signs, as limits can change quickly near ramps and junctions. Police patrol with radar, and speeding tickets in Nevada can be expensive.

Traffic Lights & Intersections

Nevada enforces traffic signals strictly, with cameras at some busier crossings. Right turns on red are allowed after a complete stop unless posted otherwise. Always yield to pedestrians, and don’t push through on yellow if you can stop safely.

Alcohol & driving

DUI enforcement is strong across the state. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08% for drivers over 21, with zero tolerance for underage drivers. During big events like NASCAR weekends, you may see sobriety checkpoints near the Speedway. If you plan to drink, use a designated driver, taxi, or rideshare service.

Seat belt laws

Everyone in the car must wear a seat belt, regardless of where they sit. Nevada is a “primary seat belt” state, meaning police can stop and fine you for this alone. Buckle up before leaving your parking spot.

Right-of-way & pedestrians

Drivers must stop for pedestrians in marked crosswalks and at unsignaled intersections. The first vehicle to arrive has the right-of-way. If two cars arrive at once, the vehicle to the right proceeds first. Around the Speedway, expect heavy foot traffic and reduce speed accordingly.

If you’re pulled over

If law enforcement signals you to stop, remain calm and pull over to the right when safe. At night, aim for a well-lit area. Keep your hands visible on the wheel, follow the officer’s instructions, and stay polite.
